Introduction
In Sandra Cisneros' novel THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET, Esperanza, a young Mexican-American girl, moves with her family from a rented flat to a house. This is the first real house for her family and a big improvement over the place where they were living with its broken water pipes and a landlord who would not fix it up. However, the new house is not what Esperanza dreamed of, because it is small, run-down, and in the middle of a crowded Latino neighborhood in Chicago. When describing her house on Mango Street, she says, "It's small and red with tight steps in front and windows so small you'd think they were holding their breath "(1).
